Warm-Up Calculator: Ready for Your Top Set

Enter the weight of your heaviest set. You get a warm-up ramp from the empty bar, with the weight, reps and plates for every set.

Why do warm-up sets matter before a heavy lift?

This works as a 1RM warm-up calculator too: enter your planned max attempt, or a heavy top set, and get the ramp to reach it.

Warm-up sets let you practice the movement with lighter weights, get your muscles and joints moving, and feel how the bar is moving that day. Done well, they get you ready without making you tired. Too few and your first heavy set feels awful. Too many, or too many reps, and you waste energy.

What warm-up pattern does the warm-up calculator use?

It uses a common pattern: an empty bar for 8 to 10 reps, then about 40%, 60%, 75%, 85% and 92% of your top set, with the reps dropping as the weight goes up (5, 3, 2, 1, 1). Each weight is rounded to plates you can load, and sets that round to the same weight are removed. Here is an example for a 315 lb top set:

Example warm-up to a 315 lb top set with a 45 lb bar

92%290 lb145 + 45 + 25 + 5 + 2.5

And for a 100 kg top set:

This is a starting pattern, not a rule. Beginners and lighter lifts may need fewer sets. Very strong lifters may add a set or two. If you feel stiff, add an extra easy set. If you are warm and moving well, you can skip one.

Does the warm-up change by lift?

  • Squat: most people like a full ramp, because depth and bracing take a few sets to feel right.
  • Bench press: shoulders often need a couple of extra light sets. Add some band pull-aparts or light rows before you start if your shoulders feel tight.
  • Deadlift: the first set is usually 60 kg or 135 lb with full-size plates, so the bar starts at the right height. After squats, you may need fewer deadlift warm-up sets.
  • Overhead press: jumps are smaller, so round to 2.5 lb or 1.25 kg.

What about a general warm-up?

Many lifters start with 5 to 10 minutes of easy movement, such as walking, cycling or rowing, plus a few mobility drills for the joints they are about to use. Then they move to the bar. The warm-up calculator covers the bar part: the specific warm-up sets for your lift.

Which weight should I enter as my top set?

Enter the heaviest weight you plan to lift that day. If your program uses percentages, work it out from your max with the one rep max chart. For a max attempt, enter your planned opener. For back-off sets that are lighter than your top set, you do not need extra warm-ups.

Warm-up tips

  • Keep warm-up reps crisp. They should feel easy and fast.
  • Rest a little longer as you get heavier. A minute or so early on, two to three minutes before your top set.
  • Warm up each lift. Even after squats, do a few lighter deadlift sets before heavy pulls.
  • For a max attempt, add a heavy single at about 90% to 95%. Our guide on testing your 1RM safely shows a full plan.

Frequently asked questions

How many warm-up sets should I do?

Usually 3 to 6, depending on how heavy your top set is. The heavier the top set compared with the empty bar, the more steps you need. The warm-up calculator adds or removes steps automatically as the weights round.

How many reps should warm-up sets be?

Start with 8 to 10 reps on the empty bar, then drop the reps as the weight goes up: about 5, 3, 2, then singles. You want to practice the movement, not get tired.

Can I use this for a one rep max test?

Yes. Enter your planned opening attempt as the top set. Then take one or two heavier singles before trying a new max.

Does it work for dumbbells or machines?

The ramp is built for barbell lifts with plates. For other exercises, do two or three lighter sets with falling reps before your working sets.
